Further, according to the recent Accenture study of nearly 600 executives in 11 countries, 41 percent believe their spending on digital marketing will increase by more than five percent next year alone. The expected digital growth is the result of marketers’ increasing confidence in digital channels, up 10 percent over the past year. That comes as CMOs see an increase in the effectiveness of digital formats, including email, online display and search, compared to two years ago.Another study found CMOs will spend more than $130 billion on innovative digital marketing efforts this year. Dairy Policy Review: Visa backlog causing ag labor pains

first_imgThe American Farm Bureau says labor visa backlogs could threaten 2016 crops. The U.S. dairy industry wants continued defense of common cheese names in trade agreements. International Dairy Foods Association is urging flexibility for dairy in federal ‘gluten-free’ rules. This and other U.S. dairy policy news can be found here. Dave NatzkeEditorProgressive DairymanEmail Dave Natzkedave@progressivepublish.com Labor visa backlogs threaten 2016 cropsU.S. Department of Labor (DOL) delays in processing visas for agricultural workers in the U.S. are fast approaching crisis proportions, American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) president Zippy Duvall said.advertisementadvertisementPaperwork delays have created a backlog of 30 days or more in processing H-2A applications at both the DOL and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Communications with state Farm Bureaus across the nation have revealed worker shortages in more than 20 states.U.S. dairy industry urges continued focus on defending common food namesWith major trade agreements pending, U.S. organizations representing producers and export marketers welcomed the Obama Administration’s ongoing efforts to ensure the European Union’s (EU) geographical indication (GI) initiatives do not undercut U.S. dairy market access opportunities. An annual Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) “Section 301” report identifies trade barriers to U.S. companies and products. According to heads of the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC), those barriers are increasingly taking the form of GI restrictions. The EU argues names such as parmesan, feta and asiago can only appear on cheeses produced in Italy and Greece, despite becoming generic names around the world, the U.S. groups contend. When these requirements are incorporated into trade agreements, the restrictions block U.S. sales of the products to the EU and increasingly affect sales to various other foreign markets.“U.S. dairy exporters believe it is critical for USTR to maintain a strong focus on the importance of firmly rejecting barriers to U.S. products driven by our competitors’ desires to use GIs to monopolize the use of common food names around the world,” said Tom Suber, USDEC president.advertisement“Our dairy industry has been gearing up to compete globally and open markets to our products,” said Jim Mulhern, NMPF president and CEO. ”It’s vitally important that U.S. trade policy reject the EU’s attempts to slam doors shut in areas in which we are increasingly competing head to head against their producers.USDA offers antimicrobial resistance research fundsUSDA is offering $6 million to fund research addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This funding is available through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI).The research funding is designed to support the Obama Administration’s Combating Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria (CARB) National Action Plan and USDA’s Task Force for Combating Antibiotic Resistance. Goals are to promote the development of sustainable and integrated food safety strategies that reduce public health risks along the entire food chain from producer to consumer.Applications are due August 3.IDFA urges flexibility for dairy in FDA ‘gluten-free’ ruleThe International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) encouraged the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be flexible in determining methods for dairy foods companies to prove the truthfulness of their gluten-free claims.Last November, FDA proposed a new rule requiring makers of fermented and hydrolyzed ingredients and foods, including yogurt and cheeses, to conduct testing and keep records to prove the products meet the agency’s definition of gluten-free prior to fermentation or hydrolysis.advertisementIn comments to FDA, IDFA noted milk and many dairy products are inherently gluten-free, and should be exempt from tests and recordkeeping. Among its requests, IDFA asked FDA to remove fluid milk as an example of an ingredient to test.Canadian government pledges dairy farmer support on EU trade dealCanadian government leaders pledged financial compensation for dairy farmers potentially impacted by a pending Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) with the European Union (EU). The trade deal could take effect in 2017.Lawrence MacAulay, minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Chrystia Freeland, minister of International Trade, said the government will work with the country’s dairy industry to identify a support package.USDA offering organic certification cost sharingUSDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) will make $11.6 million available through state departments of agriculture for organic producer and handler certification. The funding, which covers as much as 75 percent of an individual applicant’s certification costs up to a maximum of $750 annually per certification scope, is provided by two programs.About $10.7 million is available to organic farms and businesses nationwide through the National Organic Certification Cost Share Program.Another $932,000 is available to organic crop and livestock operators in 15 states through the Agricultural Management Assistance Organic Certification Cost Share Program (AMA). Eligible states are Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.Application deadline is September 30, 2016. Organic producers and handlers should contact their appropriate state agencies via the National Organic Program (NOP) cost share website.Checkoff programs and FOIAA U.S. House appropriations committee report urging USDA to exempt agricultural commodity checkoff programs from Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests is drawing criticism from advocacy organizations and others. The language is non-binding, but reflects the opinion of the committee in advising USDA on policy.Previously, 14 agricultural commodity trade organizations submitted a letter to the House ag appropriations subcommittee seeking the exemption asking that producer-funded checkoff promotion programs not be subject to public records requests. The National Farmers Union said the request gives the impression agricultural groups have something to hide in an environment where consumers are seeking more transparency in foods and food marketing.  PDlast_img read more

The Wraparound: Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby and Sonny Milano post highlight-reel goals

August 14, 2020

| lougnzkj

first_imgEdmonton Oilers forward James Neal has not quite kept up his absurd scoring pace from the previous week, but his eight goals remains atop the league’s leaderboard, tied with Boston’s David Pastrnak. Neal’s teammates, meanwhile, are racking up the points at an incredible pace that keeps the Oilers at the top of the Western Conference — and goal-scoring around the league is at its highest in years. We’re still early in the season, so take it all with a grain of salt. Only time will tell if the pace can keep going. Here’s what happened in the NHL from Oct. 11 through Oct. 17.McDavid, Draisaitl in charge in EdmontonThe Oilers owe their hot start to the superb efforts of the team’s two superstars; captain Connor McDavid (17 points) and linemate Leon Draisaitl (15) are the league’s top two scorers, propelled by the strength of McDavid’s five-point night against the Flyers. The duo was fantastic last season, but so far they have matched the level of two Pittsburgh Penguins legends you may have heard of:Leon Draisaitl (6-9—15) and @cmcdavid97 (5-12—17) of the @EdmontonOilers became the first set of teammates to record 15+ points through the first seven games of a season since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr in 1995-96 (w/ PIT). #NHLStats pic.twitter.com/NF7Tg0Rq98— NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) October 17, 2019Edmonton has scored 29 goals so far this season — 65.5 percent of those goals have come courtesy of McDavid, Draisaitl or Neal. Is this kind of top-heavy success sustainable for head coach Dave Tippett’s group? It certainly wasn’t last year, but for now, McDavid and Draisaitl remain a key cog in the OIlers’ lineup.MORE: Dynamic duo of Draisaitl, McDavid still going strong as team continues impressive startInjury bug strikes TorontoMaple Leafs center John Tavares broke a finger Oct. 17 against the Washington Capitals and will miss at least two weeks. Toronto’s captain reportedly took a Morgan Rielly shot off the hand just minutes before he scored his third goal of the season.Fans never want to see their team’s top player go down injured, but better October than May. For now, Toronto head coach Mike Babcock will have to get creative with the lines as the team gears up for a stretch that includes two games against division rival Boston.Wait, WHO leads the league in rookie scoring? Jack Hughes finally scored his first career point on Thursday against Kaapo Kakko and the New York Rangers. Kakko, for his part, scored his first goal on Oct. 12 with a beautiful forehand-backhand play. While they were among the top picks heading into the season for the Calder Memorial Trophy, the conversation has quickly shifted to another rookie. Buffalo’s Victor Olofsson’s six goals and two assists lead all rookies in scoring, with Toronto’s Ilya Mikheyev (three goals, three assists) and Colorado’s Cale Makar (six assists) tied for second place.MORE: Buffalo Sabres’ Victor Olofsson sets rookie power play scoring recordAdmittedly, each of those three players are at least two years older than Hughes and Kakko. The notion that players always take the league by storm just months after being drafted (see McDavid, Connor for more on that topic) is not accurate. Still, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Calder Trophy race this year — and whether or not the league’s most talked-about rookies fight their way back into it.Regressing to the meanNHL teams are putting 3.12 goals in the net per game so far in 2019-20. According to Hockey Reference, the last time goal scoring was so high for a full season was in 1995-96. Other league averages that remain way off in comparison to recent years through the first few weeks of play: power-play goals (0.69 per game) are up slightly more than 10 percent from last season, power-play opportunities are way up (3.33 per game) than last season — bad news for goalies as average save percentage (.907) is at its lowest since 2006-07.Of course, there is a lot of hockey left to play so don’t expect all of these numbers to remain so far off from recent years’ averages. But if average goals per game remain above 3.01 all season, the NHL will see four consecutive years of offensive growth.Goal of the weekSometimes, you can’t choose just one — three goals deserved “goal of the week” honors and they all happened to be scored on the same night. Columbus Blue Jackets forward Sonny Milano broke out the ol’ between the legs goal for a breathtaking score on Wednesday.goodness. The Wraparound is a new weekly series by Sporting News that will bring you everything that happened in the NHL.The season of the undefeated’s is officially over. While no team owns a perfect record now, the Colorado Avalanche remain undefeated in 60 minutes — with their lone loss coming in overtime to the Penguins Wednesday — and after the New Jersey Devils’ 5-2 win over the New York Rangers Thursday night, every franchise has registered at least one win, too.
