first_img “At that time, they discovered some symptoms which needed further investigation so I just agreed with that diagnosis and made arrangements to go to Cuba for further investigations. At this time, there is no clear indication of disorder or what the nature of the disorder is. It is a question of investigation and I think I can get the best advice in Cuba,” he said. While he does not suffer from a particular ailment, President Granger said that out of an abundance of caution, he took the decision to travel to the Republic of Cuba to have the relevant medical investigation done. “The Guyanese public should be assured that once those investigations are complete they would be kept abreast with the health of the President of the Republic,” he said. Ford Global Operations Chief to Retire in 2007

first_imgFrom Detroit Free Press AdvertisementClick Here to Read MoreAdvertisement Ford Motor Co. said Thursday that Mark Schulz, executive vice president and president of international operations, has announced his plans to retire from the company early next year. He began his career with Ford as an assembly line worker in 1970. Schulz, 54, is responsible for the company’s business in Europe, Africa and the Asia Pacific region. In that job, he oversees the global activities of the Premier Automotive Group, which includes Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo, as well as the company’s partnership with Mazda Motor Corp. Ford did not say who would replace Schulz, saying any resulting restructuring would be the topic of a future statement. Schulz was not available for an interview Thursday. But the departure may give new CEO Alan Mulally a chance to further streamline Ford’s operations. Mulally and outside critics have complained that Ford’s operations are too complex, with too many layers of management. Some wondered whether Schulz, a hockey buddy of Chairman Bill Ford, might be leaving the company when he skipped the Beijing Auto Show in November. Schulz had been under pressure recently as three of his four operating groups reported worse financial results during the third quarter than a year earlier. The only improvement was in Ford of Europe, which posted a pre-tax loss of $13 million, compared with a pre-tax loss of $55 million a year earlier. The other three groups are PAG, Asia Pacific and Africa and Mazda. Advertisement Schulz previously served as president of Asia Pacific and Africa, and before that he led Asia Pacific and Ford South America operations as a corporate vice president. Prior to his election as a corporate officer, Schulz was the head of Ford’s operations in Turkey for five years. Schulz serves on several boards, including the National Committee of United States-China Relations, the United States-China Business Council and the National Bureau of Asian Research. He also is a member of the International Advisory Board for the President of the Republic of the Philippines. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Valparaiso University and master’s degrees from the University of Detroit in economics and the University of Michigan in engineering, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a Sloan Fellow. Ray: An Unfair Chase…

October 19, 2020

first_imgAt the August Game Commission meeting one of Governor Lujan Grisham’s newly appointed Commissioners told of having met with trappers and opined that they were really nice guys. Well, I’m a nice person and my dogs are nice as well. This isn’t a personality contest. It is a about justice, fairness, ethics, and morality. It is about what is right. Hiding traps on our public lands isn’t. If you agree, you may visit http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/commission/proposals-under-consideration/ to read about the inadequate changes to the trapping rules and for the link where you can submit your own written comments. We don’t accept that a little bit of thievery is OK as long as it happens to only a few people. A little bit of vandalism is still wrong and considered a crime now matter how much property is defiled. Fraud is not OK even if only a few are conned. These things are illegal because they are wrong. Trapping anywhere that others can be harmed is wrong too. I will never forget my dog’s screams. I have made a point to learn how to open a trap and thankfully, this one was a kind that I physically could open. I had her out within a minute. Still her foot and my hand were both injured in the frantic rescue. It felt like someone had committed an assault on me. It felt like violent crime. The only incidents the public knows about have been reported to TrapFreeNM.org, a coalition of conservation and animal protection groups. Trapping is legal nearly statewide with the approval of the State Game Commission by purchasing a $20 license. The Game Commission is now considering the closure of some limited areas to trapping, specifically the National Forest portion of the Sandia Mountains, the Organ mountains east of Las Cruces, a 1/2 mile on either side of the road from Santa Fe to the ski basin and from Taos to the ski valley and 1/2 mile from any official trailhead. Mary Katherine Ray is the volunteer Wildlife Chair for the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club. She lives, hikes, and photographs wildlife near her home in a remote part of Socorro County. If approved, it is wonderful that hikers and wildlife in these places won’t be at risk. But why should this not be true everywhere? Do animals in the Sacramento Mountains suffer any less? Are critically endangered Mexican wolves harmed or maimed by traps in the Gila not worthy of protection from trap injury? Are hikers like me in Socorro County, or near Chama, or in the Jemez away from population centers of no consequence?center_img Hikers, birdwatchers, and hunters are not required to stay only on roads or agency trails. These areas are all near populated places and presumably get high use. That any areas have been proposed for closure is a nod that traps and public use are not compatible. I was looking at birds in the wide canyon bottom. My camera was out and my two dogs were both leashed beside me. A road runs up one side of this canyon but I don’t like to walk on it- I don’t want to be where traffic might be. And interesting wildlife I like to view doesn’t confine itself just to roads. By MARY KATHERINE RAYRio Grande Chapter Sierra Club In recent years, dozens of hikers’ dogs have been caught in traps hidden on land open to the public, including my own. The number of reported incidents is most certainly just the tip of the iceberg. It is legal to hide a trap a mere 25 yards from a road or designated trail. As I found out to my dismay only 18 months ago, traps can also legally be placed right in the middle of a non-designated game trail when one of my dogs stepped in one hidden right in the path. It may still come as a surprise that today, in 2019, it is still actually legal in New Mexico to set a steel-jawed leg-hold trap or strangling wire snare in order to catch any one of 16 kinds of native wild animal that includes bobcats, foxes and badgers, for fun and profit.last_img read more

Delegation Calls On Forest Service To Act Swiftly To Allow New Mexicans To Resume Use Of National Forests

WASHINGTON, D.C. ― U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich, and U.S. Representatives Ben Ray Luján, Deb Haaland and Xochitl Torres Small, wrote to the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Chief Vicki Christiansen Friday pressing the agency to take immediate action to comply with the law and allow the resumption of traditional forest activities on national forests in New Mexico.center_img “We write regarding the reported impacts of the recent pause of several forest activities on national forests in New Mexico as a result of the District Court of Arizona’s decision that the U.S. Forest Service is not taking the necessary steps to recover the Mexican Spotted Owl as required by the Endangered Species Act,” the lawmakers wrote. “We strongly encourage the Forest Service and other parties to the lawsuit to work quickly to respond to the ruling and resolve a variety of issues, including, but not limited to, traditional firewood gathering, tribal cultural activities, and forest restoration and fire mitigation projects. We likewise strongly urge the Forest Service to undertake the action necessary to comply with the Endangered Species Act to allow the resumption of forest activities and minimize impacts to traditional uses and projects that improve the long-term health of the forest,” the lawmakers continued.last_img read more

Census Rates Ignore Critical Factor That Over 160,000 New Mexico Households Not Yet Invited To Participate

October 19, 2020

| mrvgpork

first_imgSTATE News:SANTA FE — The suspension of field operations by the U.S. Census Bureau in response to Covid-19 has left nearly 18 percent of New Mexico without the ability to easily participate in the 2020 Census. This has resulted in artificially lower-than-average response rates and poses yet another burden for our state to overcome for a complete count in the decennial effort. “New Mexico is shouldering a disproportionate share of the national burden when it comes to the impact that Covid-19 has had on the census,” said Olivia Padilla-Jackson, Department of Finance and Administration Cabinet Secretary and Chair of the state Complete Count Commission. “When you consider that so many New Mexican’s haven’t even received an invitation to participate, it’s no surprise we lag in responses.” As of mid-April, 37 percent of New Mexico households had responded to the census, compared to a national average of 48 percent. Due to Covid-19, the U.S. Census Bureau suspended all field operations just four days after they began. This included efforts by census workers to hand-deliver forms to households that don’t have standard addresses or receive their mail at P.O. boxes. Nationwide, only five percent of the population fall into this category, but in New Mexico 17.8 percent of all households rely on a hand-delivered form. Only Alaska, West Virginia and Wyoming have a higher percentage. “When we take into consideration the households that haven’t even been given the tools they need to participate in the census, the New Mexico response rate is on par with the national average,” state demographer Robert Rhatigan said. “Nationwide, there is a direct relationship between low response rates and areas that should have, but weren’t able to, receive a hand-delivered packet.”Counties where hand-delivery is not a major consideration are responding at or above the national average and we continue to make strides in those areas. Bernalillo, Chavez and Los Alamos counties all have participation rates more than 45 percent. Conversely, Catron, Mora and Rio Arriba counties have response rates of six percent or less but are almost entirely reliant on hand-delivered forms.  “Where people can respond, they are,” Secretary Padilla-Jackson said. “I’m confident that when all New Mexican’s are given the tools they need to participate, they will.”Responding online or by phone without a unique Census ID is not an ideal option for some as it can be difficult, especially for households with a non-city style address. “The bottom line is, if you have received your invitation, take your census as soon as possible,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said. “If you haven’t received anything from the Census Bureau, wait to receive your census invitation, and respond as soon as possible once you receive the form. We will ensure, all together, New Mexico is counted.”The U.S. Census Bureau recently announced that they plan to resume field operations on June 1, 2020. The 164,000 New Mexico households who are supposed to receive a hand-delivered census form should receive that packet no later than July 9th, 2020. Until census field operations officially resumes, self-response rates for New Mexico will remain artificially low. The decennial Census helps determine allocation of billions of dollars in federal funding. Research suggests that each New Mexico resident not counted results in a loss of $3,700 per resident, per year.last_img read more

New Mexico Supreme Court Establishes Plea Deadline Before Start Of Trials And Jury Selection

first_imgNMSC News:SANTA FE — The state Supreme Court Tuesday issued an order requiring plea and settlement agreements no later than five days before the selection of a jury or the start of a non-jury trial before a judge in a criminal or civil case. “As our courts are resuming jury trials, this deadline will help protect the health and safety of New Mexicans by eliminating last-minute pleas and settlements after prospective jurors, witnesses, court personnel and other people have gathered in a courthouse anticipating the start of a trial,” Chief Justice Judith K. Nakamura said. The plea and settlement deadline becomes effective for cases in which a jury selection or bench trial is scheduled to begin on or after July 1. The deadline will remain in place until the Court withdraws or changes it by issuing a future order. The Court also issued an order updating procedures for health screening of all people seeking to enter courthouses. The order reflects the practices that courts have implemented in recent weeks in response to the evolving guidelines and recommendations from public health authorities to help control the spread of COVID-19. Under the order, anyone wishing to enter a courthouse must undergo a temperature check and answer questions to determine whether they exhibit possible symptoms of COVID-19. People with a temperature of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher will be denied entry into a courthouse or other judicial facility. Courts also will maintain a log of people entering a courthouse, including judges and court employees, to help in contact tracing in the event a court visitor later tests positive for the virus.last_img read more
