Port of Zeebrugge and Forth Ports Sign MoU on Strategic Partnership

first_imgForth Ports Limited and Port of Zeebrugge / MBZ have recently (18 June 2013) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which marks the start of a strategic agreement between the Port companies with the aim of the exploring mutual opportunities to attract new container cargo volumes. Both ports have complementary assets both in current trade arrangements and geographical positioning and through this MoU, Forth Ports and Port of Zeebrugge have agreed to explore initiatives to develop these current trade links and connections. The agreement will initially focus on enhancing container cargo volumes at Port of Zeebrugge and London Container Terminal (LCT) in Tilbury which is the UK’s 3rd largest container terminal.Zeebrugge’s container volumes are largely dominated by deepsea Far East volumes, while LCT has a particularly strong position on the South America trades. LCT at Tilbury has a unique geographical position as London’s key port, while Zeebrugge has a unique deep-water location near the seagoing trade lanes.  Zeebrugge also has a significant South America cargo base demand while Tilbury is an excellent gateway for Far East cargo for the London consumer markets.Commenting on the MoU, Perry Glading, Chief Operating Officer at Forth Ports (owners of Port of Tilbury and LCT) said: “This is great news and a real opportunity to capitalise on synergies at both Ports. Tilbury has a unique position in the UK at the heart of the London and South East markets. Using a regular feeder service from Zeebrugge we offer an alternative to large deep sea vessels who need only make one call at the Belgium ports for the onward feed service to the UK. We have a significant investment programme underway at LCT and have already installed a new ICT system, purchased 14 new straddle carriers and installed a new single lock gate. We look forward to working with MBZ at Zeebrugge on this important project.” Mr Coens said: “The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding is a logical development, since from way back Port of Zeebrugge acts as a bridgehead for the British markets, in particular the London area. By strengthening the ties with Tilbury, we aim at enhancing cargo flows.”[mappress]Port of Zeebrugge, June 21, 2013last_img read more

Councils Homelessness Effort Under Threat

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to LinkedInLinkedInLinkedInThe Scottish Government will announce the funding that will be made available to Scottish councils as part of its Local Government Finance Settlement on 15 December.Ahead of the announcement, COSLA is today (Wednesday) highlighting the impact that another cut to local authority funding will have. Today’s release focuses on the severe consequences for homelessness across the country if there was yet another cut to local government funding.Commenting on COSLA’s release, Councillor Tom McAughtrie, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities Committee commented: “These cuts will not only affect the homeless, but all of our most vulnerable people.Every one of our Council’s top priorities address poverty in one way or another and with our funds and resources already stretched to capacity, there is nothing left to give. Our services need to ensure that they are able to respond and adapt to the needs of those experiencing poverty in all its forms.A report on our Anti-Poverty work will come before Full Council on the same day as the Scottish Government announcement next week. Members will be asked to consider allocating £93,000, from our Anti-Poverty Strategy Fund 2016/17, to alleviate the impact on our customers and partners following the ending of the temporary Scottish Government funding, in September/October this year. This amount will be required in order to sustain current levels of service delivery to the homeless and vulnerable. We were praised in October last year by the Scottish Government itself for our Homelessness Support, but following subsequent cuts in December of last year we have already had to fundamentally review and refocus our homelessness service to ensure it meets regulatory standards. With new cuts anticipated next week, the results could be devastating. There is only so much we can lose whilst still providing vital help to those in dire need.”Speaking today (Wednesday) in advance of the Scottish Government laying out its spending plans for next year, COSLA’s Community Wellbeing Spokesperson Councillor Harry McGuigan said:“Councils have made great efforts to tackle homelessness in recent years but a severe cut to Local Government next week will threaten all of this hard work. As the Scottish Government look to hollow-out council funding even more, this will result in resources being taken away from support services that stop people becoming homeless.“Our funding is at breaking point and, despite the evidence that councils are prioritising the most vulnerable communities, there are only so many efficiency improvements that can be made before the quality of service is affected. While councils have done well to meet their statutory obligation on homelessness, the impact of cuts is beginning to be felt by the most needy in society.“Although many of the drivers of homelessness lie outwith the remit of Scottish and Local Government – such as the introduction of Universal Credit – it is important that both spheres of government in Scotland work together to support those in need. If one sphere of Government makes a political choice to cut its funding to Councils we are certainly not working together to alleviate the problem.“It is tragic that anyone should be made homeless in the 21st century, especially at this time of year with Christmas approaching and a cold winter starting to bite.”City of Edinburgh Council Leader, Councillor Andrew Burns, added:“Over recent years, Edinburgh has seen a steady reduction in people presenting as homeless. A major contributing factor has been the collaboration with our partners in the third sector. These achievements have also been despite a challenging economic climate and significant budget pressures throughout the city.”“Of course, protecting vulnerable people will continue to be our key priority and we are committed to reducing homelessness further across Edinburgh. But these recent, very positive achievements, will all be put at serious risk if we see any further significant budget reductions from the Scottish Government.”last_img read more

Algeria, which has been hit by weeks of anti-government protests, on Sunday banned all private aircraft from taking off or landing until the end of the month. PHOTO | RYAD KRAMDI | AFPAlgeria banned all private aircraft from taking off or landing until the end of the month. In a notice to airmen, aviation authorities said the ban prohibiting “all private Algerian aircraft registered in Algeria or abroad from taking off or landing” would remain in effect until April 30.There was no immediate reason given for the measure, which was announced after authorities reported the arrest overnight of business tycoon Ali Haddad as he tried to cross the border into neighbouring Tunisia.According to Algerian media, the decision to ban flights of private aircraft was aimed at stopping certain prominent individuals from fleeing abroad.Haddad was widely seen as a political tool of ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika whose decision in February to seek a fifth term in office despite his failing health sparked nationwide protests in the North African country.Bouteflika, whose mandate officially ends on April 28, said earlier this month he would pull out of the race but postponed elections which were due in April.Officials have not commented on Haddad’s arrest, which was reported by a security source on condition of anonymity and local media.Related Algeria president makes video appearance after month of health rumors Three killed in Algeria floodingcenter_img Mauritania private newspapers return after month’s absencelast_img read more

Share Showers of rain last Tuesday evening could not stop the heat at the Pointe Michel hard court when volleyball giants Lime Wolf Pac and WNT Young Vets collided in an all out affair. In an exciting start to the match, the Wolves jumped out to an early lead but the Vets would eventually settle in only to find that it was too little too late. In Set 2 the Vets buckled in and started to unleash their offensive weapons and made the game more interesting. But alas, the offensive prowess of a tried and tested championship caliber Wolf Pac was too much. A small crowd braved the rain hoping to see a thrilling 5 setter but would be disappointed as the Wolves took care of business in Set 4. Scores: Lime Wolf Pac 3 to WNT Young Vets 1. 25-14 22-25 26-24 25-23.The Portsmouth Breakers were also in action on Wednesday evening against the MCCU Sunrise women in Margot. Pacifica Shipping to upgrade with larger vessel

September 25, 2020

| bfkvrdqa

first_imgPacifica Shipping on Tuesday confirmed that it has acquired a larger 1700 teu vessel for deployment on its premium coastal shipping service in New Zealand. The MV Moana Chief – which is expected to commence operations formally in September 2019 – will meet growing domestic and international transhipping cargo demand. Pacifica was acquired by The China Navigation Company (CNCo) – parent of Swire Shipping – in 2014. Swire has been a long-term and active participant in New Zealand’s maritime and transport industry. The first Swire vessel called to New Zealand some 130 years ago. Today, Swire Shipping and Swire Bulk currently operate multiple liner and bulk vessels per month, connecting New Zealand to Australia, Asia, North America, Papua New Guinea, Pacific Islands and the rest of the world. Brodie Stevens, Country Manager, Swire New Zealand, said: “With the acquisition and an increase in tonnage from 1,100 to 1,700 teu, we strongly believe Pacifica will be in a good position to meet rising domestic cargo and transhipment demand. We want to expand the range of valuable domestic transport solutions currently already provided by Pacifica, and this will enable us to do so. Coastal shipping in New Zealand continues to play an important part in the country’s domestic economy. It is also highly complementary with road and rail networks.” (Image Courtesy: Pacifica) According to a report by Deloitte in 2016, 236 million tonnes of freight are moved within New Zealand annually. The size of container ships has been increasing. Coastal shipping will continue to play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions per container, and will also be a factor in New Zealand manufacturers’ decarbonisation of their supply chains. Increased tonnage to meet rising coastal and international transhipment demand Sea News, August 8 Additionally, New Zealand’s domestic freight volumes are forecast to more than double by 2040, as stated in The National Freight Demand Study 2008, and confirmed again in the NFDS update, completed in 2014 – “Even with massive investment in land transport this increase could not be accommodated by road and rail alone. By growing coastal shipping, New Zealand can take a load off the other transport modes and contribute to a more efficient land transport network. By comparison, in Japan, a country with a similar geography, more than 30% of freight is carried by sea.” Author: Baibhav Mishralast_img read more

I (also) did not want to be far from my family,” added the five-foot-eight hitter. The Guimarasnon only started playing in Manila after her stint with the Golden Lions. Bacolod City’s University of St. La Salle tapped her to be their guest reinforcement in the Shakey’s V-League. GONZAGA.
