Jerome Waite’s background in athletics has always benefited him in football, not just in getting his players fit, but having them peak at the right time. This season’s Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) is the perfect example of that. The three-time winner of the country’s top football title will be looking for his fourth title and the club’s fifth when they go up against last season’s beaten finalist, Portmore United, at the National Stadium at 8:30 this evening.”We have beaten the defending champions (Montego Bay United) and followed that up by defeating the number-one team (Humble Lion), so it shows where we are and there has been no falling off in terms of intensity,” a confident Waite, who last lead his team to victory in 2015, told The Gleaner.Consistent with Arnett Gardens’ rise at the business end of the season was the return of Vishinul Harris and a decision to play Fabian Reid as a central striker.’Reid played a number of positions, and heading into the play-offs we did not have anyone playing with consistency in front of goal and we put him there and it paid off. This is not a gamble that was taken. For Harris, it was about reintroducing him at the right time,” Waite explained. Both players, along with captain O’Neil ‘Bigga’ Thompson, the rejuvenated Marvin Morgan, Renae Lloyd and Keneil Hyde will be crucial to Arnett Gardens’ hopes of victory.Linval Dixon’s Portmore United have always looked at this season as one in which they have to get it right. Last season, they lost 2-1 in the final to Montego Bay United, and that has served as a big motivator to the players.”They know that for them to be on top, they have to improve day by day, and they don’t want to settle to be good players. They want to be the best, so they push each other, and they respond well to work,” Dixon said about his players ahead of this evening’s final.ANXIOUS TO BE BACKHe added: “They are excited and they are anxious to be back at the final. Losing to Montego Bay United in the final and to be back here is really a good job from the players. But we haven’t played the final as yet, so we still have to be grounded. We still have to be focused and be ready to play.”Among the players who were smarting from last year’s loss is midfielder and big-occasion-man Michael Binns who promised something special for the final after his wonder free kick cemented the extra-time 2-0 win over UWI FC in the second-leg semi-final to advance to tonight’s showpiece.Captain Ewan Grandison, Ricardo Morris and goalkeeper Shaven-Sean Paul will also be important for them.

BURBANK – A sixth-grade student at John Muir Middle School collapsed during a run with his gym class Thursday morning and later died at a hospital, apparently of heart trouble, officials said. Austin Cook, 11, was taking a morning run with his gym class when he stumbled and fell, said Joel Shapiro, deputy superintendent with the Burbank Unified School District. The boy was taken to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, where he later died. “It’s a tragedy for anyone, and it’s particularly a tragedy at a school community when someone of this age passes away,” Shapiro said. “And our deepest condolences are with the family.” Austin was initially conscious and complaining of chest pain, Shapiro said. Then he lost consciousness again, until paramedics arrived and he regained consciousness briefly, Shapiro said. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Police and school officials said the child appears to have died of heart trouble, but a coroner’s examination is pending to determine the exact cause of death. Dan Boyle, a spokesman for Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, said the hospital could not immediately comment on the case. Austin did not complain of any pain before collapsing, and John Muir Middle School had nothing in the student’s health record showing that he had any problem with his heart, Shapiro said. The school district plans to have more than a dozen counselors and psychologists on hand today at the school to help students deal with their grief. read more

A $576 million upgrade of the Bradley International Terminal – the largest single public-works project in Los Angeles’ history – was approved Tuesday as part of a $4 billion program to modernize LAX. With the 12-0 vote of the City Council, Los Angeles World Airports will begin a 38-month project to renovate Bradley Terminal, which was built to accommodate visitors to the 1984 Olympic Games. “This is a no-brainer for us,” said Councilman Bill Rosendahl, who represents the airport area. “We need to make the entry point to Los Angeles a beautiful spot … We have a project that will serve as a beacon and a model for the rest of the country.” The contract with Clark/McCarthy, the sole bidder for the project, includes $72 million to cover unexpected costs. The project is slated to include the construction of luxury lounges, a customs inspection area, a baggage system, and improvements to elevators, escalators and the terminal’s people-mover system. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORESurfer attacked by shark near Channel Islands calls rescue a ‘Christmas miracle’ It is the second major contract to be signed for the modernization program at Los Angeles International Airport. A $241.7 million contract was awarded to Tutor-Saliba of Sylmar for the south-runway improvement project, designed to accommodate larger jets. LAWA Executive Director Lydia Kennard said the city had sought other bids, but that the Clark/McCarthy venture was the only firm large enough to handle the project. “We believe we have negotiated a good deal for the city,” Kennard said, adding that she and her staff are aware of how costs can rise because of change orders. “I wish I could assert that there will be no change orders. But this is a complicated construction project. We will do everything we can to keep costs down.” The work is scheduled to start next year and to continue while passengers continue to use what is already considered one of the most congested terminals. Kennard said LAX has hired a public-relations firm to advise travelers about the project and what the terminal will look like when it’s finished. Frank Clark of Clark/McCarthy said the initial work will involve consolidating four smaller frequent-flier lounges into a larger area that will include business centers, showers and other amenities. Plans also call for Wi-Fi service throughout the terminal. A slight fee will be charged for access in the main terminal. Clark said the project will return some floor space to the airlines and passengers that had been lost to security measures after Sept. 11, 2001. The new baggage handling system also is expected to speed passengers through the airport and U.S. Customs. The project is expected to involve 1,400 workers, 20 percent from the local work force, Kennard said. Councilman Ed Reyes said he wants ongoing reports on how many local jobs are involved. “We have an obligation to show how we recycle our tax dollars back to the local community,” Reyes said. “We have a tremendous opportunity here to create jobs and provide some relief to the community and I want to know how we are using the money.” Kennard said LAX has worked with contractors and unions to ensure that residents are hired. It also is pushing to ensure that entry-level workers are hired and given a chance to develop work experience. email@example.com (213) 978-0390160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
